Thingamablog works fine for this purpose. Do a web search. Would be good fit, and no database required.

re> Is there a basic blogging tool that you recommend for a professional site that would work on what seems to be outdated equipment?

Yes, a Manila web site, which would be hosted elsewhere, has the capability to RENDER static files (send the files where they need to be, in this case, your server) to your existing server so you do not have to change anything. Manila sites are full featured and do not require extensive setups or installation of additional software. While the server is often cost prohibitive for many and requires extended knowledge, several Manila hosting companies exist, mine for example, where you can "rent" your site(s) for a small monthly fee. They take care of the server, backups and other maint issues. You get to worry about making your content great.

Manila was perhaps the first blogging tool and has a rich feature set and a long history of good development and good support.

Nothing is perfect for everyone but it's really a great way to create most any website or a blog. I've a number of clients with almost zero computer skills running their own web site, easily adding text stories, pictures, pdf's and files. Have a look at http://www.iblogbarn.com/compare

...and drop me a note.
