How Do I Jump Start My New Blog?

Question: How do I jump start my new blog? I feel like it’s just me.

Starting a new blog is always an uphill battle.  According to WordPress.com, there are tens of thousands of new blogs started every day – that is a lot of competition. The fact of the matter is, until you build up a following, you may actually be the only one reading your blog, but don’t let that get you down.

Start with your inner circle of friends and colleagues.  Let them know about your blog. Whether it is a personal blog or a company blog – you need to get the word out.  Put it in your email signature (careful about putting personal blogs in your company signature!), make sure you send out a tweet on twitter every time you make a post, post it on your Facebook profile – whatever you need to do.  Let people know.

A great way to get more readers is to create a facebook fan page for your blog.  Some bloggers use their personal facebook page as their blog “landing page” but you can create one for your blog as well.  By creating a facebook fan page, you will be listed and searchable in the directory giving you access to millions of potential readers.

Another great way to get your blog out there is to do video blog entries, or at the very least a video describing your blog, and upload it to youtube.com.  Remember to put a link to your blog in the description and your profile so people can click and get to your blog easily.  Doing regular video blog entries and successfully using categories and tagging will drive readers from youtube to your blog and will be very targeted traffic.

Above all – write great content!  The first second of someone finding your blog are crucial and can mean the difference of them coming back or leaving for good.  Good content – GREAT content – is a surefire way to get people not only reading your blog but spreading your link for you.

This is an important point.  You can do all the promotion you want for your blog. You can spend money on advertising, widgets for trade shows, and more.  But if you don’t provide good content, it all doesn’t matter.

So don’t worry if it is “only you” when writing your blog.  A successful blogger not only writes on their blog, but also is out there on the Internet promoting their blog and adding value to other people’s blogs.  Being active in your niche is one of the most important things to remember.  It isn’t all about your blog, its about reaching your readers no matter whose blog or website they are on.  Be an active participant and people will find you.

As well as the search engines.

How Do I Get Started Doing Video On My Blog?

Getting started using video on your blog requires a few key components:

  • A video camera
  • a YouTube or Viddler account
  • Time

That’s it!

Flip It

2009 and 2010 saw the rise of the “Flip” videocamera.  This easy to use, portable camera doesn’t have all the bells and whistles of its expensive counterparts, but it does have a USB adapter built in.  At the very simplest, you just shoot your video, upload it, and then embed the video in your blog.

Kodak Moment

A “step up” from the Flip is the Kodak Zi8, my choice for a Fliip alternative. It has the features of the Flip, but also adds a microphone input jack.  This allows you to get really great sound.

By using these entry level-devices, YouTube (or Viddler.com) to host your videos, you can get started using video on your blog within a very short period of time.  You can learn how to use these cameras in a few hours and have a video shot, edited, uploaded and embedded very quickly.

How do you make a video blog?

Question: How do you make a video blog?

A video blog uses the same type of format as a regular blog.  The difference is – you guess it – the video.

Adding videos in WordPress is easy.  You have a few choices:

  • Upload a video to youtube and use the embed code in a post
  • Upload a video to youtube and use the “add video” shortcut button
  • Host the video yourself and link to it

Here’s another question on Ask The Blogger with more insight.

As for actually creating the video, there are too many possibilities to list here.  Some people use their computer’s built in webcam, while others buy high-end video equipment and edit their videos like a professional.  Most people fall in the middle someplace.  The Flip video camera or the Kodak Zi8 are both excellent choices for video cameras under $200.

Does YouTube Have A Video Widget To Embed Shows In My Blog?

Question: I want to share videos from the Daily Flip with my audience by embedding the video code in my sidebar. But, I don’t want to do the updates manually. Is it possible to subscribe to a YouTube channel, embed code and have automatic updates occur with each new release from the channel?

Yes, it is possible, but not with YouTube… yet. If you want to embed a “show” of your or someone else’s videos in your blog or website, you’ll have grab a show player from a site like Magnify.net, assuming that show is created there.

In other words, The Daily Flip show is not just uploaded to YouTube, but it’s also uploaded to Blip.tv and is also duplicated in its own channel at Magnify.net.

Here’s option 1 for you: View my show page at Blip at http://jimkukral.blip.tv/. Then you can create a custom show player here.

The second option is for you to look at the Daily Flip Magnify channel at http://thedailyflip.magnify.net/. Magnify allows you to create a video widget of my show, check out that page here.

So remember, it’s always best to upload your videos to more than one location… not just YouTube. Other video players have better options you might like more.

How Do I Upload My Videos To Multiple Sites Like YouTube, Metacafe & Revver?

Upload Video to Multiple Sites Automatically
Question: Finding and uploading all of my videos to the most important video sharing sites takes a LOT of time. Is there software that allows me to find the important sites to upload to, and then help me upload my videos to them all faster?

Answer: As video sharing gets more popular, many bloggers and video producers want to get their videos viewed by as many people as possible. To do that, you need to get your videos uploaded to all of the important video sharing sites, like YouTube and Metacafe and Blip.tv for example.

Why? Because the more your video is seen, the better it is for you. It doesn’t matter if you’re a blogger or a web-entrepreneur, you’re making your videos to be seen by others in hopes of either drawing traffic for your blog or making money online with products and services.

Until recently, there weren’t any high-quality solutions for multiple uploading tools. But that’s changed. Check out a program called Video Post Robot.

Video Post Robot is the perfect tool for those smart entrepreneurs who are already taking advantage of online video…

Hours of time can be saved saved using this tool which automates the process of uploading to multiple sites.

Here’s a video of Chris Pirllo explaining why he likes Video Post Robot.

How Do I Put Videos In My Blog Entries?

Question: How i put videos on my blog?

I’m glad to hear that you’re thinking about this, because adding videos to your blog entries is a great way to engage your readers, and entertain them too. :)

Pretty much all you have to do is copy the code for the video you want to embed in a blog entry.

Let’s use YouTube as an example.

Visit this page at YouTube (one of AsktheBlogger’s videos).

See the area to the right of the video? There are two ways to “grab code” to use to link or show videos in your blog. (Are highlighted in yellow box)

atb_youtube.jpg

1. You can use the “URL” code to create a hyperlink to the video page at YouTube. Or…

2. You can use the “embed” code to actually embed the video in your blog entry.

Embedding your video is the better method in most cases because it doesn’t require your reader to have to leave your blog and be interrupted.
