So can someone take part of a blog and quote it without permission? If so is there a certain percentage that applies before any law takes affect?

Anything you write down is copyrighted. You then have to register it, before you file a lawsuit.

In the United States, anything you write, including blogs, is automatically copyrighted. It is not necessary to put a notice “copyright, Your Name, 2008″, but it may help make people aware that you care about your rights. Enforcing the copyright is another matter. Beyond what has been said, you can sue the person for infringement, or threaten to sue if they do not take down your stuff. The owner of the domain name registration is probably the person who posted your material, so that would be a good starting point for sending a letter. It may help to have an attorney send the letter, but that will cost something. It may be worth it if the person is a chronic offender. Note that copyright laws, and enforcement, vary by country so you would have to check the local laws outside the U.S.

I think that we all should understand that newbies are so excited to be on the net that we don;t realize that there are many people also out there that can’t wait for new material to steal. Be careful online as you would with anything else you own.

I think to prevent splog, you can copyright your content with Creative Common and put some internal links in the posts (so that when they steal the content there will link back from their site).

Hi Jim,

Thanks for your reply, you actually gave me an answer to my first problem. What prompted me to ask the question is from a website I found that has literally taken most of my websites program content and put it on theirs. I did phone and email this person, now thanks to you I have the next step. I was under the impression when you have your website copy rited you where protected, but I didn’t think that applied to a blog. I am a pioneer in my field and I have seen other websites use some of my content, and I have no problem with it, but not to the extreme of this one website.
