Alexa does more than just report stats of toolbar users. Sure, it uses the toolbar to indicate a lot of things, but I believe it uses that as an “average” and compares the percentage of those who use the toolbar to the internet community as a whole.

I believe it does a fairly accurate ranking of a website’s popularity as opposed to Google’s page rank — which is a highly secretive system and doesn’t really work for the end user so much as it works for Google’s internals.

Alexa is barely worth worrying about. It’s basically a ranking of traffic to sites purely based on people who have downloaded a thing called the Alexa Toolbar – which is considered by many many people to be spyware, and which is could be argued is only used by certain types of people (ie – not very tech savy).

Re google, just work on building your links and ensuring you content is non-spammy, and you should get there eventually – but it does take time!

Alexa rank have nothing to do with pagerank..pagerank is based on the quality of backlinks..
Alexa rank is not very accurate since they starts are based on users that use their toolbar.

I used to get really confused over this too. But now I understand that Google and alexa are calculated in two completely different ways and I think it's a really good thing that one isn't influenced by the other. Ginis last blog post..Creating Soft Selective Black and White Photographs

Another thing is that PR isn’t really _that_ important. I got many sites with 0 PR, but they still score high on some important keywords and sentences. But yeah, PR is a good tool.

I think it is far easy to have good Alexa ranking without much effort but getting Google’s attention is much harder. Perhaps we don’t have any control on Alexa but we can make some strategy to be in Google’s good book.
